Sweet Summertime

Hello, hello and happy Monday to you!  How was everyone’s weekend?  Mine was lovely, because I spent most of Saturday and Sunday in my roommate Danielle’s pool.  Well, technically it’s her parent’s pool, but they were out of town and we took full advantage.  When I say I spent most of the day in the pool, I mean in, it was 106 degrees out.  I’m sure the amount of chlorine I absorbed through my skin was not healthy, but you couldn’t even stand on the pool deck without your feet burning.  Anyway, I’m sporting quite a deep tan/burn today, and I like it.

Prior to heading up to MD for the weekend, the Orkin people came to our house to try to take care of our mouse situation.  My appointment window was from 10-12 and the guy showed up at 10:23 which was awesome.  He was so nice, and asked me where I thought the mice were coming from.  I told him that the cat usually sits in the kitchen staring at the oven, and the trap I had placed in front of the oven on Friday night was the only one that caught something.  He pulled our oven away from the wall, and immediately saw our problem.  Two giant holes in the floor by the back wall.  There was also mouse hair and droppings along the sides of the wall and the back, so it seems my intuition about where they were coming from was correct.

He put some copper wire mesh stuff in the holes, and then calked over them, which he said should ultimately solve the problem.  He also closed up another hole on the side of the wall near our radiator.  I took advantage of the oven being pulled away from the wall and scrubbed the side of it clean with bleach.  It was disgusting.  After taking care of the problems in the kitchen, he did a once over of the whole house, including my room in case there were any strays up there, and then sprayed the outside.  It’s been two nights now with no mice in traps and none in my room!  So hopefully we’re in the clear.

So, I’m only in the office for three days this week before I head off to Bethany Beach for a nice long weekend at the shore.  This is the 4th annual trip, and we have a pretty big group going this year.  I’m excited.  Past year’s trips included things like this:

I’m excited.  My liver is not.  We’ve gone every year around my birthday, some years the trip falls on my birthday, this year it doesn’t, but I’m still calling it my birthday trip.  It’s also my one and only beach trip/vacation for the summer and I plan to relax and enjoy as much of it as I can.  Come on Wednesday, get here!

What a Nightmare

So, remember that time I said all I wanted to do all weekend was hang out in my house, in the AC watching the Olympic Trials and crafting? Ha! HA!  Well, then this happened:

I saw all the warnings floating across the TV screen, “This is a very dangerous storm”, “You will lose power”, “Seek cover now”, blah, blah, blah.  I figured, “Hey, we made through Irene without losing power, and ice storms, and snow storms, this can’t be worse than any of those.”  I heard the wind start to blow, and the lights started flickering, and then with one huge gust we were in the dark.  That was 10:30 pm on Friday night.  It’s now Monday morning, we still don’t have power.  That’s 2.5 100 degree days so far without power and AC.  Supposedly 80% of us will have it back by tomorrow. I’m keeping my fingers crossed  because our neighborhood?  Still looks like this:

Yeah, I was probably a little too close to those downed power lines, but I lived so it’s all ok.  I got about maybe an hour of sleep on Friday night because of the damn heat. Trying to find food on Saturday was a disaster because most places also had no power, and if they did have power, they were only taking cash.  If you know me at all, you know I never carry cash, so I was about 10 minutes from a heat stroke and passing out from hunger when I finally found a Corner Bakery Cafe that was accepting credit cards.  Unfortunately everyone else in the Arlington area was there as well, so it took like an hour to get a turkey sandwich.

After my third ice-cold shower of the day, I decided there was no way I’d ever be able to sleep in the house that night, so I packed a bag and headed into DC, where my bff Meghan and her husband took pity on me.  They fed me, and more importantly gave me access to power to charge my electronics and the comfort of AC.  After sleeping like a baby in the ice-cold apartment, and realizing there would still be no power on Sunday, Meghan and I made ourselves comfortable at her rooftop pool for the day.

I spent Sunday night on their couch as well, because I mean, I needed to watch the Olympic Trials to see who would make the women’s gymnastics team.  So happy with that, btw, although so sad for Nastia.  I’m doubting flat on her face is the way she wanted to go out.  Anyway, I headed back home this morning to get ready for work, and to check on Pumpkin.  She’s doing good, I think, although I’m guessing she’s pretty hot because she drank from the sink faucet for a good 5 minutes when I turned it on for her.  (Yes she also has numerous water bowls/cups lying around but she likes running water).  I also finally bit the bullet and threw out a giant garbage bag full of spoiled food.  It was so sad to just toss money away like that, but the house was starting to smell.  Sigh.

Anyway, so that was my exciting weekend, here’s to hoping we get our power back soon, because there is no relief from this heat in sight.

A brick workout

Yesterday was an absolutely miserable day in Philadelphia.  It was rainy and only about 50 degrees, which for May 18 is just uncool.  All I could think about was how cold the gym pool would feel on this already wet and cold day, and I wanted to just curl up on the couch in sweatpants instead.  Luckily, my sister was waiting for me to go to the gym with and off we went together, me to the pool and her to the treadmill.  The pool definitely felt cooler than usual and I really had to talk myself into that first dive under water, but as usual after a few strokes I began to warm up.

Since I was given the OK at physical therapy last week to work on running 2 miles 3 or 4 times a week, I shortened my pool workout a little.

  • 200 m warm-up
  • 6 x 50 m
  • 4 x 50 m
  • 2 x 50 m
  • 200 m cool-down

It took a little over 30 minutes to complete, and right before the last set my ear plugs died on me and my head filled with water.  Delightful.  After my swim I went into the locker room to change for a run.  Why is it so difficult to put on a sports bra after being in the pool?  I swear I’m always standing there with it half on, flailing around trying to reach up in the back and pull it down.  I finally made it out of the locker room and found a treadmill next to my sis.  I did about 25 minutes on the treadmill total.

  • 5 minutes at about 4.0 mph at 2.5 incline
  • about 17 minutes at 6.0 mph at 1.5 incline
  • 3 minute cool-down

Total distance was something like 2.4 miles, pretty much what I’ve been doing at PT.  It felt pretty decent, only a few moments of pain towards the very end, but they went away as soon as I finished running.  I don’t know, I still feel like I’m not getting any better and that I should be able to run more than 2 miles without pain after 8 weeks of physical therapy.  Very frustrating.

While my sister and I did some abs, we were trying to brainstorm about what to have for dinner.  I’ve been horrible at grocery shopping while my mom is away and we are down to practically nothing in the fridge.  I would go today, but both my sister and I will be away all weekend and the food would go bad.  So it is pretty much take-out for dinner tonight and tomorrow.  Anyway, so after a lot of “I don’t know, what do you want” between the both of us we finally decided on Chik-Fil-A.  I got my usual grilled chicken sandwich and waffle fries, and a few chicken strips because my stupid lunch salad did not leave me satisfied.

Yummy, yummy.  Then last night was the last episode of LOST before the 2.5 hour series finale on Sunday.  I liked last nights episode, we are getting more and more answers as The End nears.  It’s really bittersweet because I can’t wait to see what happens, but I don’t want the show to end!

Happy Wednesday!  I am counting down the days till a 3 day weekend next week!
