Officially Holiday Season

Well, it’s November , which to me means the official start of the 2010 Holiday Season, and I couldn’t be happier.  Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, my favorite time of the year!  Ok, so I wrote about my epic run on Saturday, but backing up to the beginning of the weekend, Friday night was spent in my kitchen.  I offered to bring taco dip to the Halloween party on Saturday night, so I prepped most of the ingredients for that on Friday, and then moved on to my favorite pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.  I like to stay busy the night before a long run to keep myself from sitting on the couch and drinking too much wine :).

After the cookies and taco dip were finished, I finally relaxed for the evening with The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  I figured as a cult classic, it was probably about time I sat down to see it.  It’s a weird movie but I really enjoyed it, haha.  Probably because it’s a musical and I love musicals.  Saturday morning I woke up, ran, and then started to get ready for the party.  Boyfriend arrived on the 3:21 train and I picked him up in Trenton.  This year, our costumes were his idea since he went along with my sailor get-up last year.  What did he want to be, you ask?  Coach Eric Taylor and wife Tami from Friday Night Lights.  Now, as a fan of the show I had no problem going along with this, especially since all I had to buy were a pair of gold hoop earings and some aviator sunglasses.

Not too shabby a job, huh?  I also had on cowboy boots, and a belted green dress.  Definitely a comfy Halloween costume, and apparently a cute outfit that my friend Ashley would like to borrow :).  Actually the leather jacket is one of my favorite articles of clothing, may have to steal that from my mom, k mom?  Other fun costumes of the night:

It was a really fun party, and thank you times 1 million to boyfriend for not drinking and driving us home at the end of the night!  Obviously, I could think of nothing better to do at 1 am when we got home, then mess with my cat and put her in her adorable Halloween costume that she HATES.

you can see the hatred in her eyes, and the vodka in mine

Sunday morning, my mom was kind enough to bring Alex and I some Starbucks to coax us out of bed and entice us to join her for breakfast.  We complied and headed out to my favorite breakfast spot, Charcoal (aka Charcoal Steaks and Things).  It sits right on the river and serves an amazing breakfast.  After breakfast the three of us headed over to Trader Joe’s to pick up some steaks for dinner and other fantastic products.  After an eventful morning, Alex and I were more than happy to crash on the couch when we got home, just in time for the day of football to start.

Eventually it was time to drag myself up off the couch and start to get dinner ready.  My mom and I threw some sweet potatoes in the oven, sprinkled some olive oil and pepper over the filets, and I took them outside to grill.

My cat is a little monster, and uses every opportunity that the backdoor opens to try to escape and eat some plants.

And then the monster returned to beg for some pieces of steak.  She sits next to your chair and will occasionally reach up and tap you with her little paws.  I contribute to her bad behavior by actually feeding her some pieces, but look at that face!  How can you say no!?

Unfortunately, after dinner it was time for Alex to hop on a train and return to NYC, but he’ll be back on Friday for my cousins wedding!  We really had a fun Halloween weekend, and I can’t wait for the rest of the holiday’s to get here!  Sadly, now it’s Monday again and the start of another long week.  I hope you all survive today.  Also, my two roommates moved into our house yesterday without me and I am extremely jealous.  Can’t wait to join you guys!

A Productive Rest Day

So yesterday I opted to follow my Sunday long run with a rest day, since I’ll be running three days in a row this week and I know my legs will appreciate it.  Since getting injured, I try to avoid running more than two consecutive days, but sometimes it can’t be avoided.  What’s a great activity to partake in on a rest day?  Shoe shopping!  I went back and forth about these boots, but ultimately decided that I would regret not buying them and I had a $20 off coupon, so they were practically free!  You can either wear them like they are shown in the picture, or fold the top over so they hit below the knee.  Pretty excited to wear them, too bad it’s going be back in the 90s this week, sigh.  I really went searching for some new black heels to wear to work every day, does anyone else have to replace theirs every year?  I really destroy mine I guess, but I didn’t find any that had a work appropriate heel height that I liked.  Guess that means I have to go back. 🙂

After shopping, I came home and got right to pulling dinner together.  I chopped up half a sweet potato into wedge slices, threw them in a plastic bag, seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg, coated with olive oil, shook up the bag and spread them out on a baking sheet.  20 minutes later I had some delicious sweet potato wedges ready for eatin, and I partnered them with some leftover tortellini pasta salad from last week.

Pasta

I really can’t believe that I didn’t eat sweet potatoes like this until this year, not only does it taste amazing, but it is seriously one of the best smelling foods to ever come out of my kitchen.  After dinner I watched the season premier of How I Met Your Mother, delightful as always, and then some of Dancing With the Stars.  I’ll catch the half hour that I missed later this week.  Rick Fox really surprised me, he did so good and I was really surprised by it.  So happy DWTS is back!

Check out this adorable photo I forgot I took over the weekend:

My favorites

Can you see Pumpkin’s little face poking over the counter top?  Haha, Alex went to sit down to eat his leftovers Sunday afternoon and was immediately joined by the little baby.  She sat there next to him the whole time he was eating, just waiting for maybe a little piece of rib.  She’s too funny, for some reason she thinks she’s a dog and will beg for food, wait at the front door for you to come home, and always wants to sit on your lap.  Anyways she’s the best, and Alex and I both love her, which is amazing for him since he’s super allergic to her.  Also, in somewhat related news, I hate long distance relationships.  That is all.

Alright, happy Tuesday everyone.  Glee is back tonight and I am BEYOND excited, I love that show and I need some new Glee tunes to add to my running playlist.  Can’t wait!  Five miles on the training plan for tonight.  Unfortunately they will have to get done after I drop my car off at the dealership to get its sunroof fixed and annual maintenance done.  Have a great one!

Also, if you didn’t get a chance to vote for me yesterday for Project Food Blog you still can today!  Thanks to everyone who does, I really appreciate it!

College Nostalgia

I miss college.  Yes, I’m well aware that I graduated waaaaaaaaay back in 2007, but my four years at James Madison were by far the best four of my life and I miss them.  Specifically on mornings like this, when it’s cool and crisp, and I can imagine myself walking across the quad in Uggs and a Ralph Lauren cable knit sweater, coffee in hand, to my 9:30 Italian class.  I met my four best friends on the first day of Freshmen year, we all lived on the same hall and were Irish Catholic girls, and we’re still just as close now if not closer despite living in four different states.  I miss college every day, but I especially miss it in the fall when I’m reminded of football tailgates, blockparties, and the changing of leaves on campus. JM I ❤ U.

My favorite place

Sigh, alright enough nostalgia for today.  Yesterday after work I hit the treadmill for a run, and almost immediately knew it would be a rough one.  You know, when you think you’re at least 1.5 if not 2 miles into your run only to look at the display and see you’ve just hit 1.  That was kind of crushing and I was pretty defeated from that point on, which is when the bargaining began.  Ok, if you just do 4 today, you can do 5 tomorrow and add an extra after your 5k Sunday.  Or, just run the whole 45 minutes but you can slow your pace down.  In the end, the second choice was what I went with and did about 4.8 miles in 45 minutes.  I’m finally feeling significantly less tired today, so hopefully my run goes better.

After the gym, I kind of had to book it home to shower and eat dinner because I had my Fantasy Football draft at 8 pm.  Yup, I play.  My college friends and I all play together, this is my third year.  I think I ended up with a decent team, but we’ll see how it goes once football actually starts tonight!  True story: two years ago I took the Friday off after the first Thursday of football so I could go out and have fun and not worry about work.  That won’t be necessary this year, but I’m still very excited for the return of football.

Dinner was absolutely delicious.  All day at work I was dreaming about the sweet potato I had at home, but couldn’t decide what to have with it.  My mom happened to stop at the grocery store on her way home from work and picked up lunch supplies, and nothing sounded more delicious than a ham and cheese sandwich with my sweet potato.

sweet potato chips/fries

For my sweet potato I simply cut them in round slices, seasoned with olive oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg and popped them in the oven at 425 degrees for 20 minutes, flipping every five.  Soooooooo good.  I of course had a lovely side of ketchup for dipping.  I can’t believe I used to think I didn’t like sweet potatoes, what a fool I was!

That’s it from me today, have a great Thursday everyone, only one more day until the weekend!  Is it sad that I’m super excited to sit on my couch and watch movies this weekend and not have to go anywhere?
