Feeling Blue

So many sad and depressing things about today.

  1. No more holiday cups at Starbucks
  2. Not a day off until February
  3. It’s January
  4. It’s Monday

Grumpy enough for you?  Good, then you’re clued in as to how I’m feeling today.  At least it’s not February?  Sigh, I promise I’ll cheer up as soon as I finish my coffee.  I was hit hard with the end of holiday/vacation blues on Saturday and Sunday, it didn’t help that I was alone.  Saturday I spent the whole day on the couch watching Lifetime, only moving to go out and pick up some Chinese food when I thought I might actually die of starvation.  At least I had these pretty flowers to look at and feel happy :).

My absolute favorite flowers

Sunday brought much of the same, except I didn’t even get out of bed until about 12:30, again to only go pick up food.  I watched the entire Season 4 and half of Season 5 of Dexter yesterday.  I’ll let you do the math and figure out how many hours that is.  The roommates finally returned from Pittsburgh around 6:30 and I was so happy to see them, and to hear about their weekend.   Then it was back to watching more Dexter.  Watching it all in a row like that is so much better than waiting for a new episode from week to week.  It’s like a never ending Dexter movie, and really, who can complain about that.

So, somehow with moving, starting a new job, getting adjusted to the area, the holidays, I kind of forgot to work out for the past two and a half weeks.  Kind of shocking since I’m typically a freak about things like that, but I’m actually ok with it.  Today though, I’m hoping to end the non-working out streak, since I am signed up for a 10 mile race in April and I would really like to run 1:30 or below in it.  The real problem is I still don’t have my gym situation figured out.  I never joined the one across the street from work because our fitness facility in work is scheduled to open in January or February.  The gym I do belong to is closer to my house, which means I have to convince myself to go after my 40-50 minute commute home.  Blah, someone motivate me!

Um, alright, I guess that’s enough complaining for a Monday.  I have a feeling a full five-day week might be torture.  Good luck everyone.

Well It Definitely Feels Like Christmas

Maybe this is corny, but there is one part of my drive home that I look forward to every night.  As your drive South along the George Washington Parkway, the Potomac River is on your left, and the majority of the highway is dark and shaded by trees.  However, at one point you come around a bend, and all of DC is lit up before you.  The Washington Monument towers over the trees, the dome of the Capitol building can be seen in the distance, and gorgeous Georgetown University is lit up on your left.  Every night so far on my way home, this single moment has brought a huge smile to my face and made me so happy to live here.  No matter how much traffic I’ve sat in prior to that point, that view makes me forget about it. 🙂

Since I bailed on my workout yesterday morning, I had to drag myself to the gym after work, and it wasn’t nearly as awful as I anticipated.  I did 30 minutes on the elliptical (the one with the arm things too), and then ran a quick 1.7 miles in 15 minutes.  Both felt fantastic, and I could have definitely run more but I wanted to save some energy for this morning.  This morning I did 3.5 miles in a little over 32 minutes I think?  I’m not sure because it’s one of those dumb cardio machines that shuts off at 30 minutes, but that sounds about right.  Then I had to haul ass across the street for my New Hire Orientation from 9-1.  Fun stuff.  Finally at my desk for the first time today!

So, time for some fun stuff!  As I said the other day, Saturday the roommates and I spent four hours running errands, so obviously I have a few new favorite things to show you!

Stocking from Pottery Barn and stocking holder from Home Depot

candles currently sitting in front of our unusable fireplace

tree candle from Pottery Barn

We have a thing for candles in this house.  At any given time, there are at least five lit.  One day we’re definitely going to burn the house down, or the cat is going to light herself on fire (happened before).  One or the other.

Now, if I could just take a minute to complain.  Last week the chimney sweep was supposed to come clean our fire place so we could use it.  He never showed.  Yesterday, Comcast was supposed to come install my cable in my room.  They never showed.  What is it with these places completely bailing on us and our service needs?!? Not cool, especially you Comcast, especially you.  We’ll see if the chimney sweep shows up on Saturday like he is supposed to, and Comcast you should redeem yourselves ASAP.

It’s definitely starting to feel like winter down here.  This morning, with the wind chill, it felt like 16 degrees.  So cold, and apparently this trend is going to continue for the next few days.  If only we had a working fireplace, sigh.  Enjoy your Tuesday!

First Day!

Well today is my first day at my new job, and I’m currently sitting at my new desk, on my new (old, but new to me) laptop, craning my neck around my cubicle wall to occasionally glance out the window.  This morning was full of introductions, tours of the building, and initial set-ups, and web training.  Fun stuff!  I have a few meetings this afternoon, and then my first day will be behind me.  Seems pretty good so far, I’ve already had an invite in calender for the company Holiday Party on Friday, wooo!

Yesterday, the girls and I did more decorating of the house for Christmas, this time tackling the outside fence and front porch.  We’re pretty happy with the outcome so far, but I think we are going to hang some more lights as soon as we figure out an outlet situation.

Front of the house!

After the decorating, I finished unpacking my clothes and hanging them in the makeshift closet that Adrienne’s dad helped me put together.  The one that came with my room is teeny tiny, so something had to be done about it, and thanks to one trip to the Container Store I was stocked with the makings of a new closet.

new closet!

Pumpkin is trying to decide how she can make it to the open window, and I still need to buy a curtain to hang across there, but you get the idea.  It definitely added a lot of space to my cozy room :).

The rest of the day was really the epitome of a lazy Sunday.  I was in my pajamas by 6:00 relaxing on the couch with my roommates, and in bed by 10 pm.  Today after work I’m going to try to figure out a gym situation.  There is a LA Fitness (which I already belong to from home) about 10 minutes from my new house, and then there is a Bally Total Fitness right near work, which they will pay for.  With my new 9-5 hours (I used to work 7-3:30) I definitely want to try the whole working out before work thing, it’s just do I want to work out close to home and commute to work or get the commute over with and work out close to the office.  Decisions, decisions!

Alright well I’m off to meet more new people and hand in my new hire paperwork so I can get paid!  Happy Monday, only 24 days until days off for Christmas!
