The Windy City

Well I’m in Chicago, and as expected, my flight was delayed.  Not until I actually got to the airport though, so there was a lot of standing around, followed by sitting around on the plane, we finally took off an hour and fifteen minutes late.  When the beverage cart came by you bet your ass I bought a glass of white wine.  Hey at least they showed 30 Rock episodes during the flight, that was pretty awesome.

Wednesday at work was pretty decent.  I got in one final lunchtime workout for the week, 33 minutes on the elliptical and some core work, and then pretty much just sat around waiting for the day to end.  My favorite part of the day?  Setting up my out of office email notification approximate two minutes before someone sent me work.  Hahahahaha suckersssssss, find someone else to do it, i’m out till Monday.

Instead of actually packing last night like I should have, I spent many hours on the couch watching Man v. Food and drinking wine with Danielle.  It was lovely, and also probably part of the reason I woke up at 8 am today dying of thirst.  Oh well.

Since I was up at the crack of dawn on my day off, I caught a showing of Miracle that started at 8 and kept me occupied and unproductive until 11.  Woops.  I decided not to waste $75 trying to jump on an earlier flight out, and instead enjoyed  a relaxing day.  Once I finished packing, I headed on over to the nail salon and treated myself to a mani/pedi.  Hey it cost less than switching flights would have!

I made it to the airport and through security relatively quickly, only to stand around waiting to board the plane, but I already said that.  The most interesting event of the evening was when a plane that was supposed to fly out to Chicago had to come back to the gates and deboard, after sicking on the runway for three hours.  Some quick math in my head had me thinking that it was probably the 2:30 flight I was thinking about switching too.  Thank god I didn’t.  I would much rather deal with my hour delay, then three hours on the runway, cancelled flight, and other nonsense.

Dar should be getting here any minute to hang out in our room with two full size beds, haha.  Oh, and this had me dying before I left.  Pumpkin tried to pack her baby in my suitcase (she carries that little stuffed dog around the house like a weirdo).  I guess she wanted to come with me, she was a mess this morning while I was packing and even barfed all over the floor.  She has serious attachment issues.

Alright, well I’ll be back at least once more this weekend, maybe.  If not expect a major weekend recap post on Sunday.  Later.

Chi Town Recap

Well I am back from my long weekend in Wisconsin/Chicago, and I am exhausted.  This post is probably going to be a pretty picture heavy recap, only because my brain isn’t functioning on a high enough level right now.  I had a fantastic time, it was a great trip, and Chicago just might be my new favorite city.

So let’s see, the trip got off to somewhat of a rough start due to the ridiculous weather here on Thursday night.  From the start my flight was delayed by about an hour, so I hung out at the airport bar and had two beers.  Then, once the plane actually arrived, they rushed to get us boarded and in the air, only to then have the airport shut down because of storms rolling in.  I sat on the airplane, not going anywhere, until 9 pm.  It was awful, but we finally did take off 3 hours late, and I made it to Milwaukee around 9:30.  Upon leaving the airport, I immediately requested a giant glass of wine, and after I finished that, Darren and I headed to his mom’s house to spend the night before leaving for Chicago in the morning.

We arrived in Chicago around 2 pm on Friday, and spent the afternoon walking around and shopping.  Dar was a good sport, and sat playing Angry Birds while I tried on 37 pairs of jeans and actually helped me pick out a pair.  After a few hours of shopping, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.  Darren’s 27th birthday was Friday, so I was treating  him to dinner, and he decided on N9NE Steakhouse.

Dar's 27th B-day Dinner

I’m not a big red meat eater, but I figured when in a steak house order steak, and I am so glad I did because it was seriously one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.  Amazing food, a cool atmosphere, but not cheap, so save it for a special occasion.  Saturday morning I did not wake up to run, but instead slept in, and then got up to do some more shopping, and meet Amy for lunch!  Saturday was Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebrations, and the mass amounts of drunk people wandering the city were hysterical.

We finally managed to find our way to Miller’s Pub to meet up with Amy, and after a few minutes in line and a short wait inside the bar (green beers were enjoyed of course) we sat down to have lunch.  Amy was one of the first people to comment on my blog way back when, and keep coming back, so I was very excited to finally meet her in person.

Dar was once again a good sport and took pictures for us, and put up with our conversations about other bloggers and internet friends.  He barely uses Facebook, so the blogging and tweeting thing is pretty bizarro to him.  Amy already wrote about this, but the funniest part of the day came right after Darren finished talking about how funny drunk people are because you never know what they’re going to do.  A drunk guy stumbles over to our table, starts to lean towards Dar’s head with his mouth open, and pretends to blow on it and polish it with his arm.  Amy and I lost it, she was laughing so hard she was crying, and I couldn’t pull it together either.  Luckily Dar was in a good mood, otherwise that guy could have very well ended up with an elbow to the face :).  After lunch the three of us did some more walking around and shopping, well Amy and I shopped, Dar sat on a couch playing more Angry Birds.

Then it was time to say goodbye to Amy, who hopefully I will get to hang out with again when I’m back in Chicago for work in June.  Saturday night Darren and I decided on a more low-key dinner, and all I wanted was traditional Chicago Deep Dish so off to Giordano’s we went.

Seriously the best pizza ever.  I loved it, and am pretty sad I had to leave the remaining four slices in Wisconsin with Darren.  Yesterday we packed up and left Chicago to head back to Wisconsin to hang out before my 7 pm flight home.  I was very tempted to offer to stay behind when they announced the flight was overbooked, and needed three people to stay until today.  Here I am back in VA and at work today though.  Darren is flying out here in 6 weeks to visit, so it will be fun to have him in VA and show him around my town.  I’m off to get more coffee.

Day 1 and the Rehearsal

I feel like a completely new woman after getting more than 4 hours of sleep last night.  It is glorious.  Our first flight from NYC to Memphis went smoothly and we ended up landing a few minutes early, Alex managed to fall asleep for most of the flight while I read some blogs and took pictures.

When we stepped off the plane in Memphis, I was greeted with the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.  A Starbucks.  Luckily we had enough time before our next flight that I could stop and get some, and it was amazing.

so happy to have coffee

So that’s what I look like after 4 hours of sleep and minimal make-up, in case anyone was wondering, haha.  Conveniently, the couple we were hitching a ride from to get from the airport in Des Moines to the hotel in Ames was on our flight from Memphis to Des Moines, so we met up with them at the gate and chatted for awhile before boarding.  John (the guy) was Alex’s brothers roommate at JMU and is conducting the ceremony today and his wife (Kristin) is super sweet and from Fargo, North Dakota.  Yes people, I can officially say I’ve met someone from North Dakota now.

Our second flight went off without a hitch also, although this plane was significantly smaller and lacking wi-fi, booooo, so I watched the end of the movie I started on the train ride up to NYC Thursday night and took some more pictures.  First, I dove into the turkey sandwich that I bough back at LGA.  Hey when you’ve been up since 4 am, 10:30 is lunchtime.

We landed in Des Moines, grabbed our rental car, and started our drive through the country.  Iowa was pretty much what I expected, lots of corn fields and farms, but pretty.  We got to the hotel, checked in, and laughed when we discovered our room had two Queen beds.  Check out our view.

Meh, whatever, I’m currently blogging from one and Alex is eating in the other, so it’s working out just fine.  After a little down time and a quick lunch with Alex’s brother and some other wedding guests, it was time to get ready for the rehearsal dinner.

Thanks to my friend Ashley for lending me that outfit, I loved it!  BCBG skirt and J Crew t-shirt.  The rehearsal went well I think, and I got a sneak peak at the brides dress which is beautiful!  The wedding is taking place in the brides families backyard, so dinner last night was bbq and amazing.  Alex requested I not take pics of the food, so I have none but I had some amazing baked beans and a bbq beef sandwich.  General consensus is that it was brisket.  After dinner and dessert, everyone went out to a local bar to hang out some more, but Alex and I were so beat that we called it a night after one drink.

Check out this crazy Bloody Mary that our friend Jon ordered.

It has a whole shrimp in it! Anyway, I think we came home around 9:45 (10:45 to us) and I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and slept like a rock until 9 am.  I’m off to go check out the hotels fitness facilities and get some miles in, and then it’s wedding time!  I’m so excited, Lisa and Zach are an amazing couple and I can’t wait to watch them get married.

Have a great Saturday everyone!
