Roommate Night

So last night, was a good night.  Thanks for all the nice comments again yesterday, you guys are the best and really helped cheer me up.  I got home from work, just as the freezing rain/snow was starting to fall and found the roommates doing something with a chicken.  The sink was running full pressure, and an entire chicken was sitting in a pot under it.  I ignored the scene for a minute while I poured myself a vodka drink, and then inquired as to what the hell was going on.  Apparently that chicken (our dinner) was still frozen and they were trying to remedy the situation.  I offered to get my blow dryer, since it’s pretty effective in defrosting poultry but they said they had it under control.  Fine with me, as I was more than happy to recline on the couch with my drink in front of the fire.

I drank a lot of vodka, and then a lot of wine, and the three of us enjoyed a dinner of mashed potatoes, roasted chicken, and broccoli.  Yes, I do have a headache today and sadly we didn’t get enough snow to keep me home.  But it sure did look pretty when I was driving in this morning.

Yes, I am taking pictures while driving.  I’m a risk taker like that.  In other news, look what arrived on my front porch last night just in time for the snow!

Love them, they are comfy and keep my feet toasty warm and dry.  Because of last nights snow, Dani’s friend Emily came and crashed at our house after work instead of driving back home to Maryland.  This is exciting because of where she works and what she brought us.

A whole box full of delicious Georgetown Cupcakes.  I may or may not have eaten a Red Velvet one for breakfast.  Thanks Emily!  So it’s Wednesday already, huh?  Good, I’m more than ready for the weekend to be here.  So unless you live in Florida, I hear it snowed where you are last night.  How much did everyone get?

Snowy Night

Well the snow fell here pretty much all day yesterday, and they let us out of work about two hours early which was awesome and definitely saved me some time on the drive home.  Don’t get me wrong, it still took an hour, but it very easily could have taken two if I had waited until 5 pm to leave.  I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, and I think the contents of my shopping cart were amusing other people.  Three bottles of red wine, two bundles of fire wood, ricotta cheese, and garlic.  I bet they were jealous of the night I had planned ;).

The parking lot of the grocery store was an unplowed mess, so please picture this if you will.  Me, trying to push the grocery cart through a few inches of slushy snow, in heels.  Got a good visual, I assure it, it was as hilarious as you’re imagining and I came close to wiping out multiple times.  I made it home without any other major incidents, despite the streets of my neighborhood being completely unplowed and slippery, and was met by cheery roommates already well into their first bottle of wine.  I made my way right to the kitchen to start making us a good dinner for a snowy night, and they poured me a glass of wine and uncorked a second bottle :).

Dinner was Zucchini and Yellow Squash Lasagna.  I’m still trying to figure out the difference between cooking with a gas stove and electric, so it wasn’t my best effort (some of the veggies burnt in the oven) but the girls still loved it so I’ll call it a success.

The rest of the night was spent sitting in front of the fire, and drinking almost two more bottles of wine.  Yes, that would be almost four for the night, haha.  We watched Charlie Brown Christmas, and Adrienne prayed the high school she teaches at would have a two-hour delay this morning, which it did!  The bundles of fire wood had been sitting outside in the snow at the grocery store (way to go Harris Teeter) so they were somewhat damp, and in order to dry them out we had this set up going on for a while.

We may actually be trying to burn the house down

Smartest idea to have the fire wood lined up and leaning into the fireplace? No, probably  not, but it was sure effective!

It was a great night, with the roommates, and fun continues tonight as one of our other best friends from college and my sister arrive for our big Holiday party tomorrow!  Lots to do tonight and tomorrow before then, but first I have to make it through the work day, sigh.  Happy Friday, one week until Christmas!

Taking Advantage of DC

Yesterday, in an effort to have a productive Sunday, Adrienne and I decided to take full advantage of the things DC has to offer and once again hopped on the metro and headed into the city.  Three stops later we were at our destination and braving the rainy gray day to head to the Newseum.

As a former Journalism major in college, I was totally geeking out with excitement over this.  The Newseum has been on my list of places to visit in DC since I found out it existed.  It totally lived up to my expectations, and we spent almost four hours exploring the six floors.  With exhibits featuring 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina I found myself choked up with emotion, and having to hold back tears.  Then there was the Sports Photography exhibit with featured photos by Walter looss that made me want to break out my camera and really learn how to take pictures.  I could have spent hours in the News History Gallery with the collections of historic magazines and newspaper stories.  I almost shelled out $40 for the hardcover book featuring every photo to ever win the Pulitzer Prize after exploring the gallery.  The Newseum has officially become my favorite museum, and I can’t wait to go back again.

Seriously recommend checking out this museum if you are ever in DC, there is so much to read and see and it is so interesting.  In fact, if you’re in town and going, invite me!  I want to go back!  After our day at The Newseum, Adrienne and I made our way back to the metro, Newseum umbrella souvenirs in hand (the rain really picked up while we were inside) and then it was over to the grocery store to do our shopping for the week.  When we finally got home, I got right to business in the kitchen making some dinner for the two of us.  My favorite, Parmesan Crusted Chicken stuffed with Asparagus and Mozzarella Cheese with a Lemon Poppy Seed Sauce.

So good and a perfect Sunday night meal to end the weekend.  After dinner I sat on the couch with a glass of wine, in front of the fire, watching White Christmas.  It was a fantastic weekend in VA and DC and I can’t wait until the next one!  Also, I found out I got into the DC Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, so it looks like I officially have another race to look forward to and train for 🙂  Who else is running?!

I woke up this morning to a dusting of snow covering the grass and cars, it was so pretty!  I also am completely scatter brained today and left my work computer sitting in my living room.  Luckily I have training from 1-5 pm today and there is a computer I can use until then.  Sigh, haha, one day I’ll get it together.  Happy Monday!
