Sucker Punched

So yesterday I broke down in tears in the car dealership after being told I’d need to shell out $1600 for new brakes, and $210 for a new tire.  Talk about feeling like you got punched in the gut.  At least I had my credit card all paid off before putting $1740 on it yesterday, right?  Sigh.  Also, when I text you telling you I just cried in the car dealership, that’s probably not the time to yell at me for not getting a second opinion.  Dear.

Prior to my emotional breakdown and forking over all of my money, my weekend was going pretty well.  Friday morning in our monthly department meeting I received an award thanking me for my work on a project that went out earlier this year.  An award in the form of an American Express gift card.  I don’t think I need to tell you how thrilled I was that I could now justify purchasing some new fall/winter clothes.  I stopped at the mall on the way home from work and did some damage in J. Crew and Nine West.

J. Crew skinny jeans, toothpick cords in champagne, Besty sweater in Decadent Red (not that maroon color), red and grey striped sweater.  Black leather booties courtesy of Nine West (couldn’t find them on the website).  I love everything, I just need to get the waist of the jeans taken in some, since my large thighs require a larger size pant.  Thanks work for helping me replenish my wardrobe!

After I stopped being depressed about my car yesterday, the roommates and I all went over to a friend’s house to help celebrate some September birthdays.  We grilled, drank some booze, and played with puppies, including an 11 week old bulldog.  So adorable.  I was home by 10:30 and ready to go to bed.

Today is football Sunday, wooo, and a big game between my Eagles and the Giants at 1 pm.  It’s also an important week for my fantasy team, because I don’t want to start out 1-2.  I’m currently waiting around for the roommates to get up and enjoy the bacon and eggs I made and tell me how the rest of their nights went.  Happy Sunday!

Parent’s Party

Holy weekend.  For the first time in quite sometime, I had a very active and busy weekend, and damn am I exhausted today.  It all started Friday after work with a bank breaking $315 grocery shopping trip (thank god that’s split between 3 people) followed by a run to Target, where not only did I buy the cupcake pan I needed but a “leather” jacket and some other crap I didn’t need.  Damn  you Target!  The roommates eventually headed out for the night, and I got around to preparing my desert for Saturday while waiting for my family to arrive.

I figured Mini Pumpkin Cheesecakes were the perfect dessert for a crowd of 12 at a fall BBQ, and are personally one of my favorite things.  I finished up with the cheesecakes just as I heard the front gate to my house open, and greeted my family at the door.  They were all in desperate need of a drink after their long drive, so we sat around chatting and having some wine before they left for the night to check into their hotel.

Saturday morning I was up bright and early to meet up with the fam for our 11 am lunch date.  We ended up at Rustico in Ballston, which was amazing, and the perfect pre-football game meal for me.  Yes, the roommates and I are once again involved in a sports league, this time touch football.  Sadly we lost our first game of the season, but I think with some practice, actual play calling, and our real quarterback we’ll be fine.

I parted ways with the family again after football and told them to be at our house at 6 for the BBQ, and then the roommates and I ran one last errand to Home Depot before hitting the showers at home to get gorgeous.  Well, at least slightly less sweaty and dirty than we were after football.

Roommates and siblings during the BBQ (missing: two sisters and one brother).  The BBQ went off without a hitch, our parents all got along wonderfully, I managed to cook the food without destroying it, and we never ran out of booze.  We stuck with a simple menu of burgers, beer brats, side salad, pasta salad, and baked beans.  Desserts were the mini cheesecakes and an apple pie baked by Adrienne’s mom.  Once dinner was over and people began to relax, we lit up the chiminea and sat around it chatting until 2 am.  Well us kids did, my mom and aunt were the last parents standing at 11 pm.

Thanks to all the fun on Saturday night, I woke up with one raging bitch of a hangover yesterday and was pretty much dead until noon.  I managed to drag myself out of bed (and off the bathroom floor) to say goodbye to my family, before crawling back into it until Adrienne and Dani made me get up for roommate fun day.  The Redskin’s game was monopolizing the TV, so we headed into Clarendon for some football watching.  We ended up at a pretty new place, American Tap Room, where we sampled pretty much the entire menu and enjoyed some beers.  We want to go back for dinner, asap.

I was in bed at 9:30 last night watching football, and sound asleep not long after that.  This is why I can only have exciting and eventful weekends every once in a while.  I’m too old, haha.  I hope everyone had a lovely weekend!

Happy Birthday to me, today I turn the ripe old age of 26, waaah, haha.  For some reason, 26 has always been my “scary” age.  That age when you’re officially in your late 20s, and it’s time to start acting like a real adult.  Maybe that’s because when I was younger I had all these thoughts on where I’d be at 26, thoughts that certainly didn’t include living with two roommates.  I thought I’d for sure be married by 26, maybe even thinking about kids, and now that I actually am 26 I’m nowhere near either of those things.

While my life hasn’t taken the path I thought it would when I was 13, I’m pretty happy with where I am now.  I’m not married, and I definitely don’t have any kids, and I’m more than ok with that.  The closer I got to age 26, I started to realize how just not old it is, and that maybe 30 should be my new “scary” age.  This weekend definitely wasn’t the weekend of someone who is old and washed up, that’s for sure.

My sister arrived on Friday night bearing gifts from her and both my parents, that I immediately tore into like a 5  year-old on Christmas morning, and after an emotional viewing of the series finale of Friday Night Lights we all ventured out.  Whitlows Rooftop in Clarendon was our destination where we enjoyed the brief break from 100+ degree temps, and stood outside enjoying cold beers until they kicked us out as close.

Saturday I was lucky enough to wake up without a massive hangover, and my sister and I ventured out to Tyson’s for a day of shopping.  My mama’s birthday is Wednesday and we needed to buy her a present, plus I’m a big fan of birthday shopping.  My sis and I both scored some new shirts at J. Crew for a ridiculously low price, and then I splurged on some new shoes.

My favorite pair of wedges are on their last legs, and kind of stinky if I’m being completely honest, so I decided to treat myself to a new pair.  I love these because they’re just high enough without making me look like the Jolly Green Giant.  I’m still not convinced the ankle strap doesn’t give me cankles, but that’s just my neurosis.  After hours of shopping, my sis and I enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Seasons 52, making it back to Arlington just in time for the BBQ at my house.

My best friend, and original college roommate, was back in town this weekend so we had her and her fiance over for a bbq.  We extended the invite to any other JMUers who wanted to stop by and see her.

There was wine, burgers, hot dogs, potato and macaroni salad, beer, and good friends.  The party eventually moved from inside out to the shed for drinking games.

Needless to say, everyone was moving a little slowly yesterday morning.  Late in the day yesterday I was really hit with the pre-birthday blues.  I’m blaming it on the fact that Monday birthdays are lame and my boyfriend is really far away and can’t be here to help me celebrate.  Although he did send me a beautiful pair of pearl earrings to make up for it.  At least I get cake at work today :).  Have a great day everyone!
