So… about that hip

Welp, I went to the doctor on Tuesday afternoon, and it went a little bit worse than I was expecting. I honestly thought that maybe I had a stress fracture in the neck of the hip or something, which whatever rest and it gets better, but nope. My X-Rays showed that I actually have something called Femoralacetubular Impingement, which is a deformity of the hips. In my case the ball of my hip joint doesn’t curve inward, where it should, instead curves out so it causes abnormal rubbing on the socket joint. I wish I had asked to take a picture of my X-Ray (I will when I go back) because I apparently have really long hip necks, whatever that means.

Apparently a lot of the time this type of thing doesn’t really cause a lot of problems, ya know unless you’re doing something with the same repeated motion over and over and over. Like long distance running. In that case, the ball not fitting in the socket correctly causes rubbing against the Labrum, until it tears, and that’s when people start experiencing pain. At this point, my heart kind of sank, because I know exactly the treatment process for a torn Labrum since my friend, Jen, went through it a year or so ago. Arthroscopic surgery, with 6-12 weeks recovery time.

Granted I still need to have my MRI, complete with Arthrogram, to confirm that I actually have a torn Labrum, but with the hip deformity, my lack of range of motion, and area of pain my doctor seemed pretty confident. I also have the added bonus of probably need my hip shaved down, so that it wouldn’t happen again. Needless to say, I’m pretty bummed. I cried a little about it on Tuesday night, drank a lot of about it, and am trying not to completely freak out until MRI results come back. Because of the procedure I need, the first available MRI appointment wasn’t until May 5. So there’s lots of time for me to freak out and stress out until then.

I guess a disgusting, antibiotic resistant,, bacterial infection of the leg wasn’t enough of an injury this year. At least I already have crutches for the 5 weeks post-surgery I would need them for. Womp, freakin, womp.

Weights Day

Since I haven’t be able to do any cardio since March 31 (we’ll discuss another day just how I’m dealing with that; hint not well) I’ve been trying to find other ways to make sure I keep fitting in my favorite J. Crew neon shorts and white jeans. Also so I don’t completely spiral out of control and have a meltdown, because ain’t no one got time for that. That’s where the weights have come into play. Twice a week for the past two weeks (this is week 3) I’ve been doing a full body circuit with some fairly heavy weights. Yesterday was Day ‘A’ workout.

Some Notes:

  • Each exercise pair is performed as a superset. There are three sets of 10 repetitions per exercise. So for each pair of exercises (A and B), you will do 10 reps of A, then 10 reps of B, increase weight and do 10 A and 10 B again, and then increase weight again and do the final 10 and 10.
  • Weights should be chosen such that the first set is not so difficult to finish all 10, the second set takes almost full effort, and the third set takes every last bit of effort and you may come up a couple reps short. If you’re not finishing the first or second set, do not go up in weight for the subsequent set.

My friend Kathryn and I do this workout together, and our friend Pat motivates us to not slack off/makes us laugh with “that’s what she said” jokes while we’re trying to reverse lunge. It takes about an hour, if you account for the much-needed face plant time on the ab mat at the end. It’s a good workout that leaves me sweating, out of breath, and incredibly sore the next day. In fact, I might need help washing my hair tonight. If you’re looking  for a new routine, give this one a try!

Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes

Happy day after Easter! While I didn’t celebrate in any religious aspect, I do embrace a good holiday meal and love the opportunity to whip up a somewhat fancier than normal meal. Even if it is just for me and my roommate, and our dog if you’re like me and dumb enough to leave chicken sitting on the counter where she can reach. Lucky for the dog, it was just some pieces of thigh meat that I didn’t really want anyway.

Backing up for a minute though, my weekend kicked off with a trip to the liquor store after having a particular bad day on Friday. I was all set to get vodka drunk and most likely cry, and then after receiving a few quick texts my mood took a complete 180. My friend surprised me with a visit for the night, because he knew I was in a terrible mood (even if he might have had a little to do with said bad mood in the first place). All was very quickly forgiven, and we got vodka drunk together and watched Pitch Perfect. I even gave them permission to cover my mouth when I inevitably started singing along and quoting the movie. It was a pretty perfect evening.

However, when you go vodka drink for vodka drink with someone who has 80 lbs on you it takes a toll and I was hurting a little bit on Saturday. After a quick lunch and goodbye, I relegated myself to the couch for the rest of the day/night. It happens. Just left me with more energy for cooking on Sunday; which started off with some banana chocolate chip muffins to make use of some disgustingly over-ripe bananas. My favorite part of Sunday’s Easter meal though (which consisted of roasted chicken, asparagus, and scalloped potatoes) were the scalloped potatoes. It was my first time attempting the dish, and I have to say I think they came out pretty well. And I used my Mandolin without losing any fingers, which is huge.

I started off by slicing some Yukon Gold potatoes into thin slices, and then boiling them for a little while to speed up the casserole cooking process. While that was happening, I buttered my casserole dish, placing a layer of potatoes on the bottom once they had cooked slightly.

For the sauce, I melted one stick of unsalted butter in a saucepan, added 8 oz of sour cream, 8 oz of shredded sharp cheddar, pepper and seasoned salt. Once thoroughly combined, I poured 1/3 of the sauce on the first layer of potatoes.

Add another layer of potatoes, more sauce, and a final layer of potatoes and sauce, which I then topped with breadcrumbs just because I felt like it. Bake covered at 350 for 40 minutes, and uncover for the last 20 until bubbly and brown around the edges.

Now if anyone wants some potatoes… I have leftovers.

Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes
3 lbs Potatoes (russet or yukon gold)
8 oz sour cream
1 stick unsalted butter
8 oz shredded cheddar cheese
seasoned salt
pepper

Preheat oven to 350, wash and slice potatoes about 1/8 inch thick with a Mandolin or a very sharp knife, be careful. If you have the time, boil your potatoes after slicing for about 5 minutes, drain and cool. In a medium saucepan melt the butter, stir in the sour cream, add the cheese. Salt and pepper to taste. Butter the bottom and sides of a casserole dish, arrange the potatoes in a thin layer, pour 1/3 of the cheese sauce over top, repeat twice more. Bake covered for 40 minutes, uncover for another 20. Slice and serve.
